Aptis Speaking Practice Test
Speaking is the part almost nobody rehearses, because it needs a microphone and someone to listen. Each Aptis speaking practice test here plays the examiner's prompts out loud, starts the clock after the beep and records your answers, so at the end you can listen back to yourself and download the recordings. Ten tests, free, no registration.

Start Speaking TestWhat the Aptis speaking test looks like
Four parts, twelve questions and roughly eight minutes of actual speech. The timer is the examiner: it starts after the beep and it stops you mid-sentence.
| Part | The task | Time per answer |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Three personal questions: your family, your free time, where you live | 30 seconds each |
| Part 2 | One photograph: describe it, relate a personal experience, give an opinion | 45 seconds each |
| Part 3 | Two photographs: compare them, then two questions about the contrast | 45 seconds each |
| Part 4 | One abstract topic with three questions answered in a single long turn | 1 min to prepare, 2 min to answer |
Speaking is the component candidates rehearse least, because it is the only one that needs a microphone and an audience. The other four components are marked for you the moment you finish.
What actually costs marks here
- Finishing early is worse than making mistakes. Stopping at 15 seconds of a 45-second answer gives the examiner nothing to grade. Fill the time even if you have to invent the anecdote.
- Part 2 asks three different things, not three descriptions. Question one is the picture, question two is a memory of yours, question three is an opinion. Answering all three as "in this picture I can see..." is the classic way to lose the part.
- Part 3 is about the comparison, not the inventory. Listing what is in each photo separately scores less than one sentence that puts them against each other: whereas the first one..., unlike the couple at home...
- Use the preparation minute in Part 4 to pick examples, not words. Two concrete examples will carry two minutes; a list of fancy adjectives will not.
- Listen to your own recordings. It is uncomfortable and it is the fastest feedback you will get: you will hear the fillers, the restarts and the silences that you cannot notice while speaking.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the Aptis speaking test?
Around eight minutes of speech across twelve questions: 30 seconds per answer in Part 1, 45 seconds in Parts 2 and 3, and a two-minute long turn in Part 4 after one minute of preparation.
Do I need a microphone?
Yes. The browser will ask for permission to use it when the test starts. At the end you can play back every answer and download the recordings to keep them.
Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?
No. The recordings are created and stored in your own browser during the test, and they are yours to play or download. Nothing is sent to a server.
